Healthy Eating, Part 2: Slow Success Is Success

Not a whole lot to update, but enough to check in!

I had a follow-up appointment a couple of weeks ago after my latest round of labs. Unfortunately, my theory about the changes in my bloodwork being related to my iron infusions didn't pan out. At least, not yet. We'll be running another round of tests in a few more weeks, so the investigation continues.

Sometimes the Bigger Picture Tells a Different Story

When I first got my lab results back, I didn't see any alerts or red flags. The individual markers associated with the hyperparathyroidism were flagged, but it wasn't until looking at everything together that a bigger picture emerged. I was surprised, so there may be something going on that my doctors are continuing to monitor.

I'm currently waiting for a referral to a surgeon for further evaluation. So, for now, it's a waiting game and more testing. The surgery if needed, is simple and I'm looking forward to being fixed if this is it!

The Good News? Vitamin D Is Finally Climbing!

There is some genuinely good news!

My vitamin D levels have finally climbed out of the low range and are continuing to improve. And I'm noticing a difference physically, too.

My legs feel stronger. They're not as likely to randomly glitch on me, and that extreme bone pain has eased. Instead of consistent its more intermittent.

I'll take that win!

I've been repeating a few daily mantras:

I am healing my physical body.

My body is regenerating.

My body is aging backward.

Hey, a girl can have goals, right? 😂

And speaking of progress, my cortisol levels have remained fine since that little freak-out in 2024. That's another thing I'm happy to see holding steady.

Four Months Without Sugar… and No Change?

Now here's something that surprised me.

Despite four months of zero sugar (oh, there was that one slice of birthday cake on my vacation to Naples), there haven't been any changes in my liver markers or blood sugar levels. I honestly expected to see some improvement by now.

These are also areas of concern that have been documented in connection with iron infusions, so I'm still trying to understand what's contributing to what.

I'm learning that making healthier choices doesn't always produce immediate changes on a lab report. That doesn't mean those choices are pointless. It simply means the body doesn't always follow our preferred timeline. And there is cause and effect from other processes and concerns.

At least, that's what I'm telling myself! I mean I feel better, and I can tell in my clothes now.

The Weight-Loss Roller Coaster

Even tho the whole healthy eating plan wasn't to lose weight, I have been thrilled that it's finally moving in the down direction. My weight stalled for about a month following the infusions. Normally, this is where I would gain 10 pounds, so the fact that I didn't was a small victory in itself.

Then, a few days ago, the plateau finally broke, and I've dropped a few more pounds.

Twenty-seven pounds down!

I'll take it.

I've been offered a GLP medication three times now, but I've remained steadfast in my decision not to add another medication that could bring on side effects I'm already dealing with. And if you knew me well, you'd know I am anti medication.

That's a personal decision I'm making with my existing symptoms and health concerns in mind. I'm going to keep working on the things I can control and continue discussing my options with my healthcare providers.

I know where I want to go. I'm just taking a different route to get there.

So, What Am I Doing Now?

Onward!

I'm continuing to work on my eating habits, pay attention to my body, keep up with my medical appointments, and take things one step at a time. With the "slight" change in weather now, I am hopeful that I can begin to be more active outdoors in the evenings.

I'm also reminding myself that progress isn't always a dramatic before-and-after picture. Sometimes it's stronger legs. Less pain. A number on the scale finally moving again. Or simply not gaining the weight you expected to gain.

Sometimes progress is found in the things that didn't get worse.

And sometimes, success means sticking with your decisions even when the results take longer than you'd like.

I'm not giving up on myself. I'm not expecting perfection. And I'm certainly not going to let a plateau convince me that all my effort has been wasted. I honestly think I need to eat more, I seem to eat as much as a toddler, I'm just not hungry.

And the never ending Kidney Stones, well, those are still affecting me intermittently. It's part of life until they determine it's the Hyperparathyroidism that causes them.

Slow success is success.

I'll get there.

One lab result, one healthy choice, one stubborn pound at a time.
